Kate Hudson was the queen of rom-coms at one point in her career, but these days, she’s having a tough time convincing male actors to do one. That may sound shocking to hear because who wouldn’t want a charming leading lady like Hudson who shined in 2003’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — she and Matthew McConaughey were box-office gold together.

The 44-year-old actress revealed to the panel on The View exactly why the movie genre is dead at the movie theaters. “It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson admitted. “That’s a big part of the equation.” She does have a great idea on how to revive rom-coms from the audience perspective, though. “If we can get more Marvel guys like … hey, come to do a rom-com! That’s part of the formula, too,” she noted.

She might have a taker in Jason Momoa, who just so happens to be Aquaman. He’s been dying to play a “Romantic-comedy lead, the nerdy best friend, anything.” He told Men’s Health in December 2020, “I would love to do it, but so far nobody will hire me for it.” Momoa explained to Esquire that he’s “not known for my acting” because he’s “known for action.” Hollywood has stereotyped him as an actor who doesn’t “say a lot of things or use big sentences.”

It seems like Hudson needs to give Momoa a call since he checks off the Marvel movie box and he’s game to be a romantic lead. Hudson understands the secret to the success of a rom-com and even shared why her 21-year-old film with McConaughey is still a classic. “Honestly, I think it was well-written and I think there’s this sort of misconception that a rom-com is supposed to have a certain formula — which it does,” she said on the ABC daytime show. “But we made sure we had a great foundation of a script and then the cast…”

If Hudson and Momoa even have a fraction of the magical chemistry she had with McConaughey, then they are on the right track. Someone needs to come up with a concept and get writing because the rom-com needs a major theatrical revival!
