Kate Garraway gets special birthday present from husband Derek in form of recovery
Kate Garraway revealed she got a very special present from husband Derek Draper — as he remembered it was her birthday.
The TV presenter turned 54 on Tuesday 4 April and was delighted when her husband — who is recovering from brain inflammation after battling COVID-19 and its after effects —wished her a happy birthday.
Garraway told Lorraine on her ITV show: "We're looking for little bits of him to come back to us. And last night I said to him, when I was tucking him in and doing various medical bits, I said 'By the way it's my birthday tomorrow', and he looked a bit worried.
"And I said, 'Don't worry, I'm not expecting anything, my best present is you being home. I'm going to pop in and see you before I go early off to Lorraine.'

"So I came in this morning and said, 'Right I'm off to Lorraine is there anything you want to say to me?' And he said, 'Ooh, Happy Birthday!'
"I feel a bit emotional, but it's happy tears. Not to be technical, but that is massive. Obviously it's wonderful that he said Happy Birthday because that's what I want to hear but also we're looking for things that he can hold. I told him the night before and he held that idea that it is my birthday and managed to connect it back and repeat it out.
"Signs like that are just fantastic."
Draper recently returned home after spending a year in hospital. He contracted coronavirus in March 2020 and was placed in a medically induced coma while he underwent treatment. Derek then failed to regain full consciousness and is currently going undergoing rehabilitation.
Garraway married the political lobbyist in 2005 and they have two children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11.
The Good Morning Britain presenter — who has had the ground floor of her London house converted to accommodate Draper's medical treatment — recently revealed her husband burst into tears when he arrived back home.
She said: “I could see two little faces of Darcey and Billy looking out of the window and I could literally see them go, ‘He’s here!’" she said. “They ran out and opened the door.

"He immediately burst into tears, there was a lot of hugging and we got him inside. He absolutely knew he was home."
But she also admitted his return is, "an overwhelming responsibility."
