Kate Beckinsale Jokes That Being Married 'Is Kind of Easy' But Living Together 'Is a Lot'

If you weren’t already fascinated by her, Kate Beckinsale’s new interview with Women’s Health should do the trick. To say nothing of her enviable abs on display, The Widow star’s comments on marriage, being single and dating over 30 are both refreshing and enlightening. In fact, the 46-year-old’s theory about how to make relationships last for the long run may just give you a new perspective on love… or validate your own feelings.

Speaking to Women’s Health, Beckinsale — whose divorce from director Len Wiseman was finalized earlier this year — revealed she has a theoretical marriage hack. “I think more people would do well married if they didn’t have to live in the same house,” she said, adding, “Being married is kind of easy, but the living-with-the-person thing is a lot.” According to Beckinsale, women tend to “mentally subjugate our needs to whoever else is in the room” (whether it’s a partner or parents or kids). We have a habit, she posited, of saying what we want and then “end up going, ‘Oh no, no, no, it’s fine.'”

In that respect, being single is liberating for the star. She admittedly finds it “quite nice to not always have to negotiate that.”

Besides, it’s not as though dating is a stress-free prospect for Beckinsale. Earlier this year when she was seen stepping out with SNL‘s Pete Davidson, the ensuing scrutiny was intense. “If everyone’s shitting on you, it can make you kind of ugh for a minute — especially if there’s really nothing wrong,” she told Women’s Health. “If you’re strangling a squirrel or hurting someone, I get it, but living one’s life in a reasonably respectful manner shouldn’t invite anyone to get too excited.”

Ironically, Beckinsale catches flack for dating even when she isn’t actually linked to anyone. Some people simply take issue with her behavior, particularly on Instagram (although, if you ask us, she’s perfection on the social media platform). “It can feel like a little bit of a political act to be a woman over 32 who is having any fun at all. And by that, I don’t mean doing drugs and drinking and partying —because I never am — but being goofy, and going out, and not going ‘Omigod I’m going to sit home and anticipate menopause while crocheting,'” she lamented.

“Unless you’re doing that, it somehow seems to be risqué, which is just kind of ridiculous to me,” Beckinsale said, pointing out that there exists a distinct double standard. “And I witness men constantly doing whatever they like — whether that’s in relationships, or deciding to buy a motorbike, and getting a tattoo. It has not been interpreted as ‘Why hasn’t he had more children?’ or ‘Is he ever going to decide to become a parent?’ or ‘Why has he had so many girlfriends?’”

Beckinsale graces the January/February cover of Women’s Health, which hits stands on 12/31.
