Latin music star Karol G has jumped the shark — and we mean that in the best possible way.

A huge stage-prop shark, part mechanical and part animated, had a role in Karol G's sprawling and at times enchanting history-making Thursday, Sept. 7 concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. And it had just enough bite to keep things interesting.

The rhythmic ballad “Carolina” was alluring, “Tusa,” had plenty of grrrl power, “Ocean” was inspiring and sparked a sing-along, and the reggaeton hip-hop of “Oki Doki” even had the baby sharks dancing.

The shark theme was part of a story, narrated by an animated Morgan Freeman, of a mermaid whose heart becomes frozen. The shark helped the mermaid unfreeze her heart, and in doing she becomes “La Bichota,” the big girl boss.

Karol G, on stage, was a benevolent big boss, quick to smile and never far from the groove.

Karol G is native of Colombia, and her album, “Mañana Será Bonito,” became the first Spanish-language LP by a woman to top the Billboard 200 chart earlier this year. Her sold-out MetLife shows — there's another Friday, Sept. 8 — are the first to be headlined by a female Latin music star and the first time a Latin music artist has headlined two consecutive shows at the venue.

Karol G seemed to take it all in stride. She was in constant motion on the large stage catwalk when she wasn't swaying her hips, or chatting with the packed audience in Spanish.

It's fun to be the boss and Karol G showed us how.

Karol G will be in the area next week as she's a performer on the MTV Video Music Awards, which takes place Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Prudential Center in Newark. Verified resale tickets for Friday’s Karol G show at MetLife began at $137 as of press time on Ticketmaster.
