It’s Bichota Season at the 2023 VMAs! Karol G just graced the stage to perform her hit “Oki Doki” and sang her verse from her Brazilian collab “Tá OK” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday. (She also took home the Best Collaboration prize with Shakira.)

Backed by a fluorescent green heart and dressed in a pink top and plaid skirt, Karol G opened her performance with “Oki Doki,” one of the standouts from her LP Bichota Season. The singer and her tour dancers shook to “Tá OK,” her Brazilian funk collab with Dennis, Maluma, and MC Kevin O Chris.

Later in the show, Karol G took the stage alongside Shakira to accept the award for Best Collaboration for their song “TQG.”

“Que viva Barranquilla, que viva Medallo, y que viva Colombia,” Shakira said, referencing her and Karol’s birthplace.

“If collaborating with the legendary Shakira was impressive, earning an award with her as something from another planet,” Karol G added in Spanish. “Thank you, everybody. I love you.”

Karol was up for three awards this year, including the Artist of the Year trophy. She’s up against Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, and her collaborator Shakira. Karol’s track “TQG” was up for Best Latin as well.

Last month, Karol G released her album Bichota Season, a follow-up to her Mañana Será Bonito LP that featured songs with Peso Pluma, Kali Uchis, and Young Miko.

Karol G had previously been nominated for VMA awards five times, including Best Collaboration for “Tusa” with Nicki Minaj in 2020 and Best Latin for “Bichota” in 2021, but she did not take trophies home.

Among the performers for the night are Demi Lovato, Doja Cat, Kelsea Ballerini, Måneskin, and Stray Kids, along with Shakira, who’s being honored with the Video Vanguard Award, and Diddy, who earned the Global Icon title.

The MTV Video Music Awards are airing live on MTV from the Prudential Center in New Jersey.
