Karlie Kloss is a major advocate for girls' science and tech education and, by her own description, a proud liberal.

And so even though she's married into the Kushner/Trump family, it's not really a surprise she'll be supporting Joe Biden's election campaign.

The supermodel and Project Runway host will appear Thursday at a Biden event focused on young people and STEAM, an expanded approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, art and math.

Also joining Kloss, 28, will be Girls Who Code founder Reshma Saujani and others — Dr. Morine Cebert Gaitors, Nancy Lu and Adrianna Williams.

The Biden campaign said in a statement that the event "will highlight the important work that is happening with women in STEAM." Biden has several initiatives related to this, as part of his campaign.

A source close to Kloss explains: "For those who know Karlie, this event makes a lot of sense. She cares deeply about the future of women in STEAM and has always supported the candidates who stand for the issues she’s passionate about."

Kloss launched Kode With Klossy in 2015 as a way to empower and inspire young women to become involved in tech. Throughout the year, the organization hosts learning experiences to help girls pursue their passion — and one of the most well-known programs is a free two-week bootcamp for teenage girls.

"Kode With Klossy is about igniting the initial spark in young women to want to explore the world of technology, so applicants that show creativity, passion and curiosity around tech always stand out to me," Kloss told PEOPLE last year.

Kloss married investor Josh Kushner in 2018. His older brother is Jared Kushner, husband to President Donald Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump; both Jared and Ivanka are senior White House aides.

But Kloss has been clear she doesn't mix politics and family, even when the scrutiny about their differences has been, as she told British Vogue in 2019, "hard."

“I choose to focus on the values that I share with my husband, and those are the same liberal values that I was raised with and that have guided me throughout my life,” she told the magazine last summer.

Josh, 35, said something similar to Forbes in 2017: “It is no secret that liberal values have guided my life and that I have supported political leaders that share similar values.” Still, he said then, “It’s important to be open-minded and learn from differing opinions.”

In a podcast interview earlier this year, reflecting on her relationship with Josh, Kloss said she "really followed my heart on choosing to be with the person that I love, despite any complications that came with it. You know, I knew for me, it was worth it to fight for that.”

Kloss has said she voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 while Josh did not vote for Trump, according to Esquire.

The couples do spend time together away from the White House: When Kloss and Josh threw a three-day party in Wyoming to celebrate their wedding, Jared, 39, and Ivanka, 38, stopped by the night before, a source told PEOPLE.

A Jared source said then that he and his brother remained very close. Josh told Forbes in 2017 that “Jared and I still speak every day.”
