Kansas City Chiefs bar in Iowa creates a Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce-inspired pizza

Truman's KC Pizza Tavern is in its "Traylor" era.

The Kansas City Chiefs bar at 400 S.E. Sixth St. in Des Moines' East Village recently launched a Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift-themed pizza. The pizza flavor is inspired by the Chiefs tight end's pregame snack of French toast topped with strawberries and Swift's penchant for breaded chicken tenders.

The Chicken and Waffles Pizza (Traylor's Version) celebrates the rumored pop culture power couple. The title references the rerecording of the music megastar's earlier albums, which are titled "Taylor's Version," but with the added r to mash-up her name with Kelce's first name.

Truman's managing partner Chris Mendenhall said the creation pays tribute to the internet's newest obsession.

"We are the Chiefs hangout in town. We are completely full an hour and a half, two hours before each game, so why not embrace what is going on?" Mendenhall, who noted he's not a Swiftie, told the Register.

The pizza went on sale just days before Swift was a no-show during Kelce's birthday week game against the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Oct. 8.

Swift first attended one of Kelce's home games in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium as the reigning Super Bowl champions suited up against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 24. She was spotted posing with fans near a plate with a breaded chicken tender and sides of ketchup and ranch, according to a photo that made the social media rounds.

In November 2022, Kelce told lifestyle website Inside Hook that "every pregame meal has been French toast and strawberries since I’ve been on the Chiefs." He was drafted to the NFL team a decade ago in 2013.

The pizza combines Kelce's love for sweets and sugar with Swift's craving for savory protein.

"It's a very filling pizza; I think it's fantastic. I'm passionate about it because I worked together with my kitchen guys and came up with it," Mendenhall said. "It may be a little too eccentric and too wild for some people."

The pizza features Truman's handcrafted crust with a spiced cinnamon cream cheese base topped with breaded chicken tenders, chunks of buttermilk waffles, strawberry slices, pieces of pineapple, cinnamon, sugar and mozzarella cheese. Slices are glazed with a homemade strawberry and pineapple puree.

"You get that very sweet autumn, fall seasonally appropriate flavor," Mendenhall said about the pizza's cream cheese base.

If you're stopping by Truman's to pick up a Traylor's Version pie, bring an entourage like Swift. When the Chiefs took on the New York Jets on Oct. 1, the pop star's close friends joined in including Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, "Queer Eye" star Antoni Porowski, "Game of Thrones" actress Sophie Turner and Hollywood royalty Hugh Jackman.

Swifties can follow-up their pre-game meal with popcorn and pop during a viewing of "The Eras Tour" concert film, which premieres Oct. 13 in theaters across Iowa. The highly anticipated film includes the Pennsylvania native's early August performances shot at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The film has grossed over $100 million in worldwide presales, according to USA Today.

Truman's is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays; 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 7 a.m. to midnight Fridays; 8 a.m. to midnights Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays.
