Kamala Harris wants Mike Pence to testify before Senate in impeachment trial

Sen. Kamala Harris joined The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday where she revealed who she'd like to see testify in front of the Senate if the House were to impeach President Trump. On Wednesday, EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland implicated Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Vice President Mike Pence, acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and others of wrongdoing in the Ukraine scandal. Though Harris would like to see all of Trump's inner circle testify, there are two she is focused on.

"Going forward, again, all the president's men," Harris said. "Bring 'em all forward. Pompeo. Pence."

Pence has denied any knowledge of alleged wrongdoing and has tried to stay out of the Ukraine conversation. But after Sondland's testimony, that may be hard to do. Sondland not only testified that he expressed concerns to Pence in September that U.S. aid to Ukraine was being tied to investigations into Trump's political rivals, Sondland also said, "Everyone was in the loop." That includes Pence.

"You can't hide behind, you know, the president on this," Harris said. "You can't prance around talking about being the vice president with all the benefits that come with that, and not take the responsibility that comes with that position."

Though the House has yet to vote on articles of impeachment, it's likely the vote will happen before too long. And if the impeachment moves to trial in the Senate, Harris does not have high hopes for the outcome.

"Among the things at stake now is truly the integrity of our democracy," Harris said, "and I don't have a lot of hope, frankly, that my Republican colleagues in the Senate are going to have the courage to stand up for what they know is wrong."

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
