Vice President, Kamala Harris, spoke with PEOPLE recently where she shared her favorite Beyoncé song. The historic VPOTUS also spoke of her marriage and what it’s like working in The White House.

“I just love that song,” she spoke of Bey’s “Break My Soul,” adding that she “[plays] it all the time.” “I think it’s one of the anthems for women… when [Beyoncé] says ‘you,’ you could be life, you could be a person, you could be a situation,” she explained.

You will not break my soul. I can endure.”

VP Harris and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, attended the Renaissance World Tour this summer, where she donned a gold sequined LaQuan Smith blouse and Emhoff wore a black blazer and white dress shirt.

“Thanks for a fun date night, @Beyonce!” Harris wrote on Instagram and X at the time.

The Second couple attended the Landover, Md., show at FedExField.

Harris and Emhoff also spoke to the publication about how they fit in time with each other as husband and wife amid Harris’ super-busy schedule.

Saving each morning for “check-in” time, and the end of each evening for “wind-down time,” Emhoff shared, “We try to approach those moments as husband and wife, not vice president and second gentleman.”

He added, “The morning check-in is a little more procedural: ‘Where are you today? Love you, too. Have a great day.’ But to the extent we’re able to have that connection at night, it’s really couple time: time talking about kids, family, and very little about the workings of our days.”

“I usually wake up in the middle of the night with some thought of what’s going on,” Harris shared. “Then I fall back asleep, and the next day starts.”

The couple has a blended family, to which Emhoff’s children call the VP, “Momala.” They share stepchildren, Cole, 29, and Ella, 24. “It’s the name the kids gave me, and I wear it proudly,” Harris beamed.

As the first Black and South Asian woman Vice President, Harris also spoke on how she combats negativity that comes with her rare role.

“The strategy is focusing on the people who are there to support you rather than giving your energy to those who may not be,” she said. “It’s important to have people in your life who will applaud your ambition,” and also have “people who are going to say to you, ‘Honey, you need a mint.’ ‘You have food in your teeth’.”
