Kamala Harris defends Rashida Tlaib's controversial remark about Trump: 'She's not the first nor will she be the last elected person to curse in public'

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., stopped by The View on Tuesday and weighed in on controversial remarks made by newly sworn-in Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib about President Trump.

Tlaib, who was sworn in as Michigan’s representative from the 13th Congressional District on Thursday, was speaking at an event for progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org when she relayed a conversation with her son to the crowd: “And when your son looks at you and says, ‘Mama, look you won, bullies don’t win,’ and I said, ‘Baby they don’t,’ because we’re gonna go in and impeach the motherf***er.”

The View co-host Meghan McCain asked Harris about Tlaib’s comments, saying, “I was under the impression the Democratic Party is ‘When they go low, we go high.’ And now it’s, ‘Impeach the…’ — I can’t say it on television.”

Harris, who many think will soon announce she will run for president, had this to say:

“Honestly, my candid response is that she’s not the first nor will she be the last elected person to curse in public. … People are feeling very passionate right now in our country, and they’re expressing those views in a variety of ways. I also do believe that in the passion, what we also do have to check, as a separate matter, is that there are also very … powerful voices in our country that are sowing hate and division among us. And we also need to check that.”

As for one reason why people are so passionate right now, Harris pointed to President Trump’s proposed border wall, which she called a “vanity project.”

“It is a problem of his own making,” Harris said about Trump’s wall. “When I travel this country, folks have plenty enough problems that they need their president to focus on instead of a wall.”

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. on ABC.
