Kailyn Lowry Shares Photos of Her Drinking Placenta Smoothie, Creating Artwork After Welcoming Baby No. 5

Kailyn Lowry isn't letting her placenta go to waste.

On Monday, the podcaster, 31, shared a carousel of photos to her Instagram, revealing that she'd turned her placenta into a drinkable smoothie and pieces of art after confirming to PEOPLE that she quietly welcomed her fifth baby last year.

Sharing a video of herself blending her placenta, Lowry included photos of some of the artwork her family had created out of the rest of her organ and paint. "This was the second time I got to work with @lancasterplacentaco 🫶🏼," she wrote in her caption.

According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, "there is no scientific research regarding the beneficial effects" of eating the placenta. The study mentions that there are "possible detrimental health risks associated with placental consumption in women."

Last week, Lowry confirmed to PEOPLE that she'd welcomed her fifth baby, son Rio, with her boyfriend Elijah Scott last year. This is the first baby for the couple, however, the reality TV alum also shares sons Creed, 3, and Lux, 6, with ex Chris Lopez, 9-year-old Lincoln with ex Javi Marroquin and 13-year-old son Isaac with ex Jo Rivera.

"I wanted to be able to tell my own story on my own terms and kind of share what information I wanted to share instead of being within a contractual obligation or storyline," Lowry, exclusively told PEOPLE about why she kept her son a secret.

But Lowry, admittedly, wasn't necessarily "ready" to share her private family news. "I feel like it was ripped out from under me time and time again," she explained. "I kind of feel like my hands are tied. People are announcing it for me and so, at this point, I might as well just talk about it."

"At this point, I can at least try to do it my way," she continued.

Although Lowry hid the news from the world, she said the couple's "close circle, our family and our close friends all obviously knew." They even had an intimate baby shower to celebrate the little one's arrival, which the entrepreneur noted was "incredible" since it was "a really great time to kind of disconnect" given that all in attendance were asked to not bring their phones.

This isn't the first time that Lowry has drank her placenta. In 2020, the Teen Mom 2 star revealed that she had blended up her placenta and drank it in a smoothie by sharing a photo of the drink on her Instagram. Lowry began her series of posts with a picture of herself holding a blended fruit drink, asking fans if they could "guess" what she was drinking.

Hours later, the mom shared a shot of a half-empty glass of smoothie, captioning the post, "If you guessed my placenta, you're right!"

"Blended with fresh fruit & almond milk," she wrote. "Couldn't taste the placenta at all!"
