Kacey Musgraves wins Album of the Year at 2019 Grammys
It’s Kacey Musgraves‘ golden hour.
The country artist won the coveted Album of the Year award at the Grammys on Sunday night for her critically acclaimed, genre-bending record (and EW’s pick for Best Album of 2018) Golden Hour.
“I would have nothing without songs… it’s all about the songs,” Musgraves said, thanking her husband (Ruston Kelly) and extolling this current music era as a “great time” for “art.” “Thank you to my fans. Thanks for spreading this music.”
The singer bagged four Grammys on the night; that brings her total Grammys tally to 6, and her first for AOTY. Musgraves spoke with EW in 2018 about the record’s influences. “I had this vision of futurism meeting traditionalism, and picturing this world where vocoders and synth pads can live with country instruments like banjo and pedal steel,” the 29-year-old singer told EW, adding that getting married was also a big inspiration. “My world just completely changed. I met my now husband [singer Ruston Kelly] around the time that I set off on a new creative journey, and songs [like “Butterflies”] just started coming out of me. I hear a lot of songwriters say, ‘I’m happy now, I can’t write anymore.’ And I don’t really understand that. I want to write about everything. I don’t want to just write sad songs. So, naturally, that new chapter brought out new sounds.”
Musgraves beat out fellow nominees Brandi Carlile, Cardi B, Drake, H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe, and Black Panther: The Album soundtrack.
Fans will have a chance to hear Musgraves’ now-Grammy-winning album on the road with the singer’s “Oh, What a World Tour,” running through the summer.
