Justine Triet gave an emotional thank you to her cast and said that with Anatomy Of A Fall she’d tried to show how truly hard it is to capture truth.

“This movie is about the truth. The impossibility of capturing it. It’s construction,” said the helmer accepting the award for the Cannes Palme d’Or-winner — only minutes after the film won for Best Screenplay.

Anatomy of A Fall, from Neon, stars Sandra Hüller as a writer living with her husband and visually impaired son in a remote mountain town in France. When her husband is found dead outside their home an inquiry becomes a murder investigation and Sandra is indicted – the main evidence against apparently being the complexity of her marriage, which is piercingly dissected at trial.

“Thank you for never trying to make this character a perfect heroin,” Triet told Huller. “Thank you for creating a complex woman who never apologizes for saying what she thinks.”

In competitive field, much decorated Anatomy Of A Fall was considered the frontrunner. It was named Best International Film and Best Screenplay at the Gotham Awards; Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle; and was recognized by the European Films Awards (Best Film, Director, Screenplay and actress for Huller) and the British Independent Film Awards (Best International Film).

Anatomy was also just the third film helmed by a woman to take the top prize at Cannes. (Neon’s fourth straight Palme d’Or winner after Triangle of Sadness, Titane and Parasite, which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.)
