Justin Timberlake's PR Team Might Be on The Defense After the Britney Spears Allegations

Justin Timberlake’s PR team may be sending out messages to media outlets that things are OK behind the scenes, but there are some curious social media posts popping up that have fans scratching their heads. In the wake of Britney Spears’ allegations about Timberlake in her memoir, The Woman in Me, it seems that someone is working overtime to clear his name.

A Spears fan account noticed that the same message began appearing over and over again under posts that discussed the revelations. “Two consenting adults made a joint decision what was before them at that period in their lives. I see no issue,” reads the posts on X, formerly Twitter. It’s possible that bots were utilized to defend Timberlake amid the less-than-stellar headlines.

What doesn’t feel so great about this social media campaign, whether fans or the pop star’s publicists mounted it, is that the tactics are very similar to what happened to Amber Heard. Bot Sentinel, a research firm that studies social media “to help fight disinformation and targeted harassment” noticed that Heard was experiencing “one of the worst cases of cyberbullying and cyberstalking by a group of Twitter accounts,” during her defamation trial against Johnny Depp. The bots wound up controlling the narrative in the court of public opinion and Heard never stood a chance to have her story told without interference.

And in what seems to a pattern here, Evan Rachel Wood was also on the receiving end of threats after she accused Marilyn Manson of sexual abuse. It’s a targeted campaign against women who bravely step forward about the powerful men who negatively affected their lives.
Timberlake has yet to make a public statement about Spears’ book, and it’s likely that he’s waiting for its official release on Oct. 24. But a lot of damage has been done to his reputation, and someone is trying to mop up the mess on social media in a rather inelegant way.
