Justin Timberlake's 5 best collaborations to rock your body before his Super Bowl performance
Justin Timberlake will perform for the halftime show at Super Bowl LII. This will be JT’s third time playing at the big game. His previous shows featured Aerosmith, Britney Spears, and his infamous wardrobe malfunction with Janet Jackson. Fans hope this year’s performance will include some surprise collaborations. At a press conference he said neither *NSYNC nor Janet Jackson would appear. But based on his star-studded past, here’s who we hope may up during the show.
The Black Eyed Peas
In 2003, Timberlake lent his vocals, but was not officially credited, to the Black Eyed Peas’ antiviolence anthem “Where Is the Love?” The reason was Timberlake was in the midst of promoting his debut solo album, Justified, and his label, Jive Records, was concerned about possible overexposure. Eventually, the different parties reached a compromise in which Jive gave clearance for the vocals of Timberlake to be released on the song, but he did not appear in the song’s music video nor was he officially credited as a contributor to the song. Luckily for fans, he appeared in the updated 2016 music video.
Timbaland
The 2006 release of “SexyBack” helped to establish his new R&B sound and was certified three-times platinum. Timberlake revealed that he went “left,” singing the song in a rock style, not an R&B style, which seemed to work. Timbaland produced this track and was also the narrator for the song. “SexyBack” became Timberlake’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, staying seven weeks at the top spot. Timbaland went onto co-produced all JT’s solo albums.
Rihanna
“Rehab” from 2007 was another Timbaland-produced track for which, according to Rihanna, Timberlake wrote the song’s lyrics “in his head.” She said of JT’s vocals on the song: “He didn’t write anything on paper. He went into the booth and sang it.”
Madonna
Before recording her 10th studio album, Madonna was asked what music appealed to her. She said she loved Timberlake’s records. So the pair decided to work together on a dance hit. It seemed to be a good pairing because at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009, “4 Minutes” garnered Madonna and Timberlake a nomination in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category.
Jay-Z
The 2013 song “Suit & Tie” serves as Timberlake’s highly anticipated musical comeback following a six-year hiatus, during which he pursued an acting career and developed his skills as a record producer and songwriter for other artists. Lyrically, this Jay-Z collaboration is an ode to the joys of “being handsome and well-dressed.”
