Justin Timberlake Says He Took a 'Real' Look at His Past to Give His 'Perspective' on His New Album

His first solo album in six years will be released on March 15

Justin Timberlake's upcoming album might be his most personal one yet.

Timberlake, 42, spoke with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about how his new music will give fans a "real" perspective on his life ahead of his performance on Saturday Night Live this weekend.

"I was able, on some of the songs, to look back at the past and have a real, not a refracted perspective of what it was because they always say ... you always hear that thing about, well, there's never any truth, there's just everybody's perspective of what happened. But to really look at it and be able to metabolize and verbalize my perspective on it, I don't think I've ever really done that before," explained Timberlake.

Fans can expect the album titled Everything I Thought It Was, out March 15, to have songs that are "introspective and "incredibly honest."

It follows 2018's Man in the Woods and was introduced by the single "Selfish" — an R&B midtempo ballad — on Thursday. The singer first performed the track during an intimate free performance for his fans in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.

His new album will soon be able to be heard live as Timberlake announced on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, that he will be going on tour starting in April.

Timberlake is a father to sons Phineas, 3½, and Silas, 8½, with wife Jessica Biel. An insider told PEOPLE in November that Timberlake is in "such a great place."

"He's happy at home with Jess and their kids, and he's focusing on new music," the source said. That same month, he and his *NSYNC bandmates Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick stepped out at the premiere of Trolls Band Together.

The movie featured the song "Better Place" — the band's first song together in more than 20 years. While speaking to PEOPLE in December, Fatone told PEOPLE that the possibility of a reunion tour for the band hasn't been ruled out.

"You know what? Never say never. I think we have to honestly have a sit-down and have a conversation," he told PEOPLE.
