Justin Bieber Finally Apologizes For His Insensitive April Fools' Day Joke

On Instagram on Tuesday, Justin Bieber apologized for his April Fools’ Day joke about Hailey Baldwin being pregnant. The singer issued an official apology on April 2 for his prank, in which he teased Baldwin’s pregnancy. Many found his joke in poor taste, especially since many individuals struggle when it comes to conceiving. But, Bieber has recognized he’s offended people and is now offering remorse.

Next to a screenshot of an article from Fox News with the headline, “Justin Bieber slammed on social media for fake pregnancy news,” the 25-year-old artist wrote, “There’s always gonna be people offended, there’s also people who don’t take jokes very well, I am a prankster and it was APRIL FOOLS. I didn’t at all mean to be insensitive to people who can’t have children.” He added, “A lot of people I know, their first go to prank on April fools is telling their parents they are pregnant to get a big reaction. But I will apologize anyway and take responsibility and say sorry to people who were offended.”

He then went onto make an analogy about the time he once “shoved cake” in his younger sister’s face on her birthday thinking it would make her laugh, but instead he got the opposite reaction and she cried. “You sometimes just don’t know what will hurt someone’s feelings not to compare pregnancy with cake in the face but it’s just to paint the picture of not knowing what will offend,” he explained. “Some might have laughed but some were offended .. I think With pranks u sometimes have to roll that dice.”

On April 1, Bieber posted several posts on Instagram, the first featuring a sonogram without any caption. The second post showed a series of images of Baldwin at the hospital in a bed staring at her bare stomach. The photos of Baldwin seemed to suggest that she was at an OB/GYN appointment. Bieber captioned the series of images, “If U thought it was April fools.”

Finally, the third and final picture in his April Fools’ prank was of a sonogram with a dog photoshopped into it. Bieber wrote next to it, “Wait omg is that a,,, APRIL FOOLS.” As pointed out by Billboard, fans tweeted that the first sonogram image shared by Bieber appeared to be the same image used for Wikipedia’s entry for ultrasound.

At the time of his three Instagram posts, it was hard to determine if Bieber was truly joking, even after Baldwin commented on his first post with the sonogram, “Very funny…” Now we know for certain that Bieber was clearly messing around, and he’s sorry for it.

Whether Bieber’s joke offended you or not, at least he’s owning up to his mistake and recognizes how insensitive his prank was. Hopefully moving forward he’ll be more conscious, and even more so when it comes to April Fools’ pranks.
