When Joelle Carter, who played Ava Crowder on FX’s Justified, stopped by Yahoo TV to help us recap the show’s April 14 series finale (watch her guest host an episode of TV in No Time below), she opened up about her character’s fate.

After surviving a showdown between Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Avery Markham (Sam Elliott), Ava fled Harlan. Four years later, Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) showed up on her doorstep in Lebec, Calif., and he discovered she’d had Boyd’s son and named him Zachariah.

“When I found out that Ava had the son, I thought that was gonna be [a] great motivator for her not to be obligated to be on either side [Raylan’s or Boyd’s], to be able to play both sides and look for opportunity first and foremost,” she says. “The hard thing was, all through the season, I couldn’t share it with anyone, any of the reporters, that this woman has to get out, she has to do this. And along the way, I think she wanted Boyd to work it all out and let them get away, or she wanted somehow to give just enough information to not completely hurt Boyd but for Raylan to keep her out of jail. And in the end, she had to run and look out for herself. I like that: That’s a very Elmore Leonard woman. She gets away with it all, and the men are left holding their tails.”
