Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Set to Release a New Two-Part Memoir

The former Supreme Court Justice's memoir will be released in two volumes on Oct. 1

Anthony M. Kennedy, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, will be releasing a new memoir later this year.

The upcoming memoir will be published by Simon & Schuster in two volumes titled Life and Law: The Early Years and Life and Law: The Court Years for release on Oct. 1, the publishing company announced Tuesday.

Justice Kennedy’s memoir will follow his beginnings as a child raised in Sacramento, California, in the 1940s and his early career as a practicing lawyer, through serving on the highest courts in America, according to a press release from Simon & Schuster.

The attorney will also share insight into the major cases he heard during his 30 years on the Supreme Court. Those included decisions on abortion, gay marriage, religious liberty and the death penalty.

Justice Kennedy served in the U.S. Supreme court from 1998 to 2018, during a period of sharp division after the Reagan administration. He made the call on various divisive cases as a member, swaying his vote between the Court’s liberal and conservative blocs and shaping the Constitution into what it is today.

Many of these cases sparked social discourse and tensions across the country and became so well-known we still refer to them today in shorthand: Casey, Lawrence, Obergefell, Citizens United, Bush v. Gore.

In the second volume of his memoir, Kennedy will explain his methods and reasons for his judging. The book will also include portraits of Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, William Rehnquist, Antonin Scalia, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“This is one of the best books ever written about how a judge thinks and works," said Editor Robert Messenger of the upcoming memoir. "Anthony Kennedy takes a long view that should interest all earnest Americans.”

Kennedy writes in the preface of the first volume, "Judges wear black robes to signify that justice must be the same regardless of the individual who is on the bench and yet we want judges who try to understand the world around them. Judges cannot do this, and others cannot know if they have done so, until the judge himself or herself, and others who are looking on, know something of the judge’s background.”

Justice Kennedy’s two-volume memoir will be sold separately and as a boxed set starting on Oct. 1, and are available for preorder now, wherever books are sold.
