So just what can Petersburg, area expect to see from Sunday’s storm? Likely a messy mix.

PETERSBURG — The next round of winter weather is a day away, and the area still appears on track to see a mix of rain and snow before all is said and done.

As is the case with most storms that come through, Interstate 95 seems to be the dividing line between light and heavier amounts of precipitation. According to the latest National Weather Service predictions, Petersburg is at the far southern area of a band of weather that could see as much as two inches of snow, but the expected amount is an inch or less.

“Snow will spread north Sunday late morning and afternoon,” the NWS office in Wakefield said in a tweet Saturday afternoon. “Snow will change to a wintry mix late afternoon. Impacts from snow and ice are expected across central Virginia and the Piedmont.”

A winter storm watch is in effect for the western suburbs of Richmond and points west. Most of the Tri-City area is under an advisory that will last all of Sunday.

Sunday will dawn with rain, snow and freezing rain for most of the morning and into early afternoon. Following about an hour of rain and snow, the precipitation will change over to all rain by around 3 p.m., NWS predicts. Highs will be in the low 40s.

NWS expects little to no accumulation of ice.

Rain will continue into the overnight hours Monday with a low temperature expected of 33 degrees.

Martin Luther King Day Monday will be rainy with a slight chance of a snow mix in the afternoon. The highs will be in the low 40s.

Petersburg officials said late Saturday that crews will be out early Sunday getting bridges and main roads ready for the inclement weather. These crews will be out all day Sunday and Monday responding to changes in conditions.

The police and fire departments will also monitor road conditions.

City officials urge residents to stay off the roads whenever possible and use off-street parking where available.
