UPDATE, with Sunday actuals: Jurassic World Dominion came in slightly higher in the global and international box office actuals with a $178M second frame across 72 overseas markets, down 47% in the 15 holdovers that debuted the previous weekend. The offshore total through Sunday is $247.4M with global jumping to $392.4M.

China logged a confirmed $53M, the biggest opening of the year for a Hollywood title and the 5th best start for any movie in the market. The films above Dominion are local pics that debuted during the Chinese New Year celebrations in February and had 6-day launches. Comping the Friday-Sunday frame only, JWD becomes the 3rd biggest bow of 2022.

In other slight shifts, the UK grossed $14.9M, France $9.8M, Australia $8.6M, Germany $7.3M and India $5.8M. Mexico rose to $30.6M and Brazil to $8.7M versus Sunday’s estimates.

SUNDAY UPDATE, writethru: Big action at the global and international box office this weekend as Universal/Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World Dominion put its dino-print into an additional 57 overseas markets, and along with last weekend’s holdovers, grossed an estimated $176.6M to lift the offshore cume to $245.8M through Sunday. With the threequel’s stomping domestic bow, the global tally has reached a toothy $389.1M.

At the same time, Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick is still speeding along as it crossed the $700M mark worldwide, with (a rather fitting) $747M through today. The Tom Cruise-starrer added $52.7M in 64 overseas markets during its third frame, another terrific drop at just 39% — despite losing the majority of IMAX screens to the dinosaurs. The international cume is now $353.7M as domestic approaches $400M.

Is this phenomenon going to cross $1B worldwide? Signs are now certainly pointing there. Already, Maverick is on track to become Cruise’s biggest worldwide grosser, overtaking Mission: Impossible – Fallout in short order.

We’ll dig into all of the details on both films below, but here are some initial benchmarks for the Colin Trevorrow-directed Dominion: 16 overseas markets had the biggest franchise opening weekend including previews, 12 markets had the biggest franchise opening weekend excluding previews and three markets delivered Universal’s 3rd biggest opening weekend ever.

The Chris Pratt/Bryce Dallas Howard-starrer that sees the return of legacy cast from 1993’s Jurassic Park also scored No. 1 starts in 52 of the 57 new markets. Those debuts (excluding China — more on that below — and excluding previews) are 11% below 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and 29% below 2015’s Jurassic World, both at today’s rates. They also came in 38% above Maverick.

JWD notably delivered $52.5M in China for the biggest opening of a Hollywood title there this year. As noted yesterday, it has become the top studio movie of 2022 and performed almost in line with Jurassic World for the three-day; the earlier movie having opened on a Wednesday.

This is all the more impressive given that about 20% of cinemas remain closed in China, including all of Shanghai and some of Beijing.

Universal Pictures International President of Distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg tells Deadline, “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. It is a true testament to the enduring love for this franchise and a monumental collaboration between filmmakers and the cast, the Universal team around the world and exhibitors everywhere.”

Dominion also scored $25M in global IMAX, the format’s 4th best worldwide opening ever for a Universal title. Internationally, IMAX landed its 5th best launch weekend for a Universal movie with $12.7M, including $6.3M from China which is the biggest Hollywood debut since May of 2021.

As for Maverick and IMAX, the global box office cume has reached $75.6M, making it the format’s biggest release of 2022.

Both Maverick and Dominion have runway ahead as the next big June release is family-leaning Lightyear from Disney/Pixar. Each also has an ace up its sleeve. Top Gun 2 goes to Cruise-loving Korea on June 23 and JWD releases in Japan, a strong market for the franchise, on July 29.

Speaking of Korea, local pic The Roundup continues to reel ‘em in, now having grossed $84.6M — easily the No. 1 movie of the pandemic in the market. New this session was Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Cannes Best Actor winner Broker which landed in 2nd place at $6M.

The threequel that welcomes back cast from 1993’s original Jurassic Park bowed early in 15 offshore markets last session, nabbing $55.7M. This session, it opened the jaws wider to include another 57 markets — landing No. 1s in 52 of those — and grossed another $176.6M. This lifts the offshore cume to $245.8M. With domestic’s start in the current frame, the global total is $389.1M.

As noted above, there were several milestones set for the third pic in the most recent franchise iteration. The new markets (excluding China and previews) came in 11% below 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and 29% below 2015’s Jurassic World, at today’s rates. Some markets outperformed JW:FK in their bows.

And then there’s China where the market is about 80% open and gave JWD a hearty welcome. This year so far has been rough in the PRC, and perhaps this is a sign of better things to come. The start was $52.5M, the biggest opening of a Hollywood title there in 2022 to date. Overall, it’s already the top studio movie of the year.

As a whole internationally, this is a strong start, particularly in light of some still impaired markets overseas, the strength of Top Gun and lower social scores versus the previous films in the series. Regardless, what’s important that we’re seeing is that audiences are jazzed to go to the movies — and that two major tentpoles can co-exist in the global landscape.

Looking at individual JWD markets, the UK opened No. 1 this session with $15.4M and achieved Universal’s 5th highest grossing 3-day weekend of all time, beating JW:FK.

France had a $9.7M opening weekend, just above JW:FK at No.1. Australia logged Universal’s 3rd biggest opening weekend of all time with $8.5M to beat JW:FK. Germany reached $7.5M at open, in line with JW:FK including previews. India took $5.7M for the 2nd biggest MPA opening of 2022.

In Spain, where the film had a shopping mall tour of seven cities, Dominion dominated with a $5.4M launch. Friday was the 2nd biggest opening Friday of the year and the 3rd biggest opening Friday of the pandemic; Saturday was the highest grossing Saturday of 2022 and 2nd highest of the pandemic.

Other highlights include Malaysia ($5.2M — 3rd biggest Universal opening weekend ever, biggest of the pandemic); Indonesia ($4.7M, above JW and slightly off JW:FK); Taiwan ($4.5M — the top opening weekend of 2022, with Saturday the best single-day box office of the year); and Netherlands ($3M — including previews, the biggest opening of the franchise).

In holdovers, Mexico was still No. 1, adding $8.1M for a 46% dip and a $30.4M cume to date, above both JW and JW:FK at the same point. Korea has grossed $21.7M so far, just about in line with Jurassic World; and Brazil stuck No. 1 with a rolling cume of $8.4M.

The marketing and promotions team went to town(s) on the movie with activations in several areas as seen in a selection of respective market photos above.

Continuing to hit stratospheric heights, the Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel saw another tight hold this weekend internationally, dropping just 39% — coming off an incredible 16% drop in the sophomore session last frame. And this even though it lost most of its IMAX screens in the current session.

The offshore total is $353.7M through Sunday while global has spread its wings to $747M in three weeks. Is it going to get to $1B worldwide — without China and Russia? I would not bet against this movie. It still has Korea to come and runway ahead.

There were some crazy holds in overseas markets including Japan ($33.9M cume/-6%), Mexico ($9.9M cume/-16%) and Brazil ($13M cume/-18%).

The UK leads all play at $63M, followed by Japan ($33.9M), Australia ($32.6M), France ($28.7M), Germany ($18M), Brazil ($13M), Taiwan ($10.9M), Mexico ($9.9M), Italy ($9.3M) and Saudi Arabia ($8.5M) to round out the Top 10.

Disney/Marvel’s sequel has now grossed $930.2M globally, including $532.4M from overseas. It still holds the mantle of No. 1 biggest release of the year globally. Offshore, it is the No. 8 MCU picture of all time when excluding China and Russia in the comparison (the film has not released in those markets).

Directed by Sam Raimi, the Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer added $5.4M in 48 markets this session, dropping 58%. Ukraine kicked off to $145K, besting the recent openings of The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick.

The Top 5 markets to date are the UK ($51.4M), Korea ($49.2M), Mexico ($40.6M), Brazil ($33.1M) and France ($27.7M).
