FOWLERVILLE — With prom night fast approaching, the Fowlerville Police Department — along with the Fowlerville Fire Department, Livingston County EMS and Corrigan Towing — will conduct a mock car crash at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Performing Arts Center at Fowlerville High School.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vehicle fatalities are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States, accounting for more than one-third of deaths.

Add prom-night celebrations to the mix, and inexperienced drivers are considered at-risk for accidents caused by distractions, poor decision-making and a lack of seatbelt compliance.

The demonstration is meant to remind students of the dangers of unsafe driving habits, including driving under the influence of substances, speeding, distracted driving and failing to use a seatbelt.

For parents, the event is a reminder to discuss safe driving with teens and set family driving rules to protect them from being injured or killed in a crash.

The department will be using real crashed cars in the demonstration, while students play out a scene as the crash victims. Fowlerville seniors and juniors will watch and learn how emergency responders handle the situation in real time.

FPD is urging parents to set a good example when driving, reinforce teen driving laws and talk to their children about the dangers of unsafe driving.
