Original Story: Jan. 6 – 12:02 p.m.
While attending a Philadelphia 76ers home win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, Hall of Fame swingman Julius Erving fell ill and was transported to a nearby hospital. Erving was in a suite at Wells Fargo Center when his health worsened and he was reportedly removed in a wheelchair. Erving was in attendance and the team commemorated him for his iconic rock-the-cradle dunk over Michael Cooper in 1983.
Sixers Vice President of Communication Dave Scholler issued an update on Erving’s health. Although, he didn’t go into detail, Scholler seemed to convey that Erving was recovering and that he was not seriously ill.
“Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving fell ill at tonight’s game and was taken to a local hospital, where he is currently being evaluated. He is expected to be released after the evaluation,” Sholler said on behalf of the Sixers and Dr. J’s management team.
Erving’s management team also released a statement.
Statement on behalf of Dr. J’s management team:
“Mr. Erving fell ill at tonight’s game and was taken to a local hospital, where he is currently being evaluated. He is expected to be released after the evaluation.”
