Julie Bowen Addresses Rumors That She’s Feuding with Modern Family Costar Sofia Vergara

Julie Bowen is addressing rumors that she and her Modern Family costar Sofia Vergara are feuding with one another.

On Wednesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bowen, 46, set the record straight about claims that she and her fellow leading lady are not seeing eye-to-eye.

“Every now and again I get a call or you get an email that says, ‘Well, so and so trash mag will be running a story that you — and this week it was — are icy to Sofia Vergara because you’re jealous of her fame,’ ” Bowen told host Ellen DeGeneres.

“So I email her last night and then we talk and I’m like, ‘What should I say?’ because we’re friends. I’m like, ‘What should I say? You’re funny,’ ” she explained of reaching out to her ABC costar about addressing the rumor mill that has them at odds with one another.

Vergara’s answer? “Please, just borrow my blouse,” Bowen said in a Vergara-inspired accent. “So, I’m borrowing her blouse,” she continued of the purple, one-shoulder top.

DeGeneres, who has been in the public eye for the past three decades, is no stranger to the spotlight, and questioned how “those people stay in business when they totally fabricate stories. They just make up whatever they make up.”

Bowen responded, “Well, you know it kept one of our candidates up there for a long time. I’m not going to name names but you don’t have to have the truth anymore. You just have to have the internet. You can just make up anything.”

And before Bowen committed to her leading role in 2009 on the Emmy-winning comedy series, the mother of three contemplated backing out.

“I almost didn’t do it,” Bowen revealed at the top of the interview. “I wanted to, but I was so pregnant with the twins during the audition that process and then would just bring me in and stare at my stomach — I think that they maybe legally couldn’t say like, ‘What’s that about?’ And I think they thought I was so large that I was going to give birth at any minute and then I could do the show after, but instead they were just playing it very like, ‘Mhmmm.'”

“I’d go home and cry and think I’m never going to get this — the greatest job in the world — so I took myself out of first place for it, because there was another job that was auditioning where the lady was pregnant,” Bowen continued. But when she realized how wonderful the opportunity could be on Modern Family, she did “some scrambling to get the job back.”

“I don’t know what my life would be like right now,” the actress said of the thought of not taking on her ABC character.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show airs weekdays (3 p.m. ET) on NBC.
