Julianne Moore, who earned an Oscar in 2015 for her role in Still Alice, recently recalled to PEOPLE the precarious situation she got into that night because of her Chanel column dress.

"There was a break in the show and my husband and I went out and I said, 'I'm just going to have something to drink. I'm really thirsty.' I drank all this water. And then I thought, 'Well, I'll just go to the bathroom.' And I couldn't get my dress up, because I'd never tried to pull it up," she told PEOPLE. "I came out of the bathroom and he looked at me. I said, 'I can't, I can't do it. I have to wait until the end.'"

Moore, 62, is currently getting Oscar buzz for her latest film May December, and calls receiving an Academy Award was "an amazing moment."

She also notes the added attention to red-carpet fashion over the years.

"It used to be less important when I was first starting out, and it’s become kind of more part of what we do," says Moore. "But I also try to enjoy it, because it’s a privilege to get to wear these clothes."

Though the two stars had never worked together, Moore says while filming together in Savannah, they formed an instant bond.

"We knew each other from Hollywood events and then saw each other at a Stevie Wonder concert. I sent her an email after I saw Black Swan saying what a beautiful performance it was. But we never really had a real conversation until this film," says Moore of Portman. "I’m so grateful we connected.”

May December is now streaming on Netflix.
