The dancer first announced her book, titled Everything We Never Knew, in a video on Instagram. “I wrote a book!” she said. “And it is coming out, finally! I wrote this back in 2020 and have been sitting on it for quite some time getting all of the things that are surrounding this book in order to release it for all of you on August 13th.”
As for what the novel, which is co-written with author Ellen Goodlett, is about, Hough kept the details to a minimum. “I wanted to write a book that was truly about the universal themes of life,” she said, noting that she wrote it during “a very, very challenging but also expansive time in my life.” As a reminder, Hough split with her husband of three years, Brooks Laich, in 2020.
“I hope that when people read this book, they see themselves on the page while also going into this supernatural, fictionalized story where it can feel a little bit like an escape,” she said, adding that the book also has a series of “Easter eggs” that longtime fans of hers might piece together. “Everything is fiction with lots of personal details,” she added.
“This was also happening around my Saturn’s Return,” she detailed. “It was right around that time when everything I knew started shifting and the conditions in self-belief and systems that I had put in place sort of came crumbling down.”
“I always say, you can think of it as the joy of transformation or the fear of change and that is what this book is all about,” Hough concluded.

In the book’s description, fans get a taste of what the story is about. The novel follows the story Lexi Cole, a top-seller real estate agent who shares a mysterious connection one night with a “man surrounded by a dark haze.”
Following that moment, Lexi begins to develop a special set of skills. “As more strange events unfold, Lexi can’t deny the truth: something is changing inside her,” the description reads. “She feels other people’s emotions, sometimes even glimpses their private memories.”
