Julian Edelman Says Tom Brady Running on the Field at Retirement Ceremony 'Got My Juices Boiling' (Exclusive)

The former Patriots stars, who won three Super Bowls together, also reunited for a hilarious NFL Kickoff campaign alongside other retired players

When former Patriots co-stars Julian Edelman and Tom Brady reunited recently, it was just like old times, says former Super Bowl MVP Edelman.

The former Patriot retired in 2021 after winning three Super Bowls alongside Brady, whom the team honored in a tribute on Sunday. "It was awesome," Edelman, 37, tells PEOPLE of the halftime celebration for his former teammate.

"I thought he had a killer speech, got my juices boiling a little when he ran out and gave the LFG," says Edelman.

Brady was joined by his three children, Jack, 16, Benjamin, 13, and Vivian, 10, for the tribute, which Edelman says "was really special" to see.

"I just thought it was an awesome day for him and for New England," Edelman continues. "Tom spent a lot of time out there, and that's probably a second home. I can't speak for him, but I can imagine with all of his family, his mom and dad going there for 20 years...it was great that everyone was there for it," says Edelman.

The former NFL stars also reunited for PepisCo and Frito-Lay and Beverages' 2023 NFL Kickoff campaign, "Unretirement" alongside fellow retired NFL stars Dan Marino, Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith.

The commercial pokes fun at the possibility of stars who have been retired for more than a decade getting back out on the NFL field.

Edelman says he and Brady "haven't worked together in a few years, ever since he left down to Florida, but it was just like it always was" when the duo reunited for the ad.

Working with Brady again was "a lot of fun," says Edelman, who likens "talking before the shoot" and running lines with Brady to "when we would prepare and sit in the locker room together" before NFL games.

Edelman adds, "It was great to reminisce and catch up and work together again."

Edelman says he's loving retired life because of the time he gets to spend with his family, and his daughter Lily Rose in particular.

"The best thing is I get to be around my family, my daughter, more. You get to experience things that you haven't experienced in a long time, like doing anything in September, or going to family birthday parties, going to pick your daughter up at school, and seeing cousins and nieces and nephews," he says.

On the other hand, Edelman says there are definitely aspects of life in the NFL that he misses in retirement. "I think it's exactly what we experienced on the set of this commercial," he says of the "Unretirement" campaign spot.

"You miss going out and hanging out with the boys, working hard, and going through the ups and downs and the battles of an NFL season with guys that you're always around," says Edelman.

The former Super Bowl MVP says he also misses "winning games" as a player in the league. "I was blessed and fortunate enough to play in an organization with guys that were insanely good and we won a lot of football games. So, I miss that."
