“Food is the most temperamental actor you can have on set,” admits Christine Tobin, the food stylist on the Max series “Julia,” in a new, three-minute, behind-the-scenes feature that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively. She explains, “We want to make sure that the food will present beautifully, but last.” That is indeed a priority on a show that is centered on legendarily delicious meals. Sarah Lancashire, who delivers a stunning turn as iconic cook Julia Child, describes Christine as “the invisible me,” continuing, “I look like I’m doing it all, but I’m doing very little.” Watch the exclusive video above.

The new footage offers an inside look into how the delectable food, which plays a prominent role on the series about the beginning of Child’s television series “The French Chef,” goes from kitchen to camera. Showrunner Chris Keyser says that the show functions as a “collaboration between the kitchen and the writing,” with creator Daniel Goldfarb adding, “We give her the episodes, and she always starts with the real Julia Child recipes.” In Season 2, “Julia” follows the title character as she travels not only to the South of France to collaborate with her cookbook co-writer Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini) on new recipes, but also to a television special inside the White House. Keyser says, “We have an entire working kitchen, and that kitchen travels with us when we go.”

The feature also includes interviews with many of the cast members. Bebe Neuwirth, who plays Julia’s real-life trusted friend Avis DeVoto, says, “The food is gorgeous, it’s photographed beautifully.” Brittany Bradford, who portrays Alice Naman, Julia’s producer, praises Christine not only as a food stylist but also as a “food anthropologist,” because, “There’s a history to food. When we share food with other people, we’re sharing our culture.” Lancashire observes that food is “a fantastic leveler. You just put a table of food out for people and suddenly it doesn’t matter where you come from, what you do.” Emmy Award winner David Hyde Pierce, who costars as Paul Child, quips, “We were so lucky and blessed that Christine ended up being the head of that department because we all benefit, and get larger.” Fran Kranz and Fiona Glascott also make appearances.

Tobin shares, “I grew up with Julia Child, and what I love most is paying homage to her and celebrating her.” This new video is a celebration in and of itself: luxuriate in mouthwatering footage of Child’s classic dishes including sole meunière, French escargots, roast duck a l’orange, Queen of Sheba chocolate almond tort, and countless others. Keep your eyes “peeled” for a glimpse of Julia’s visit to the White House from season two, too. The second season of “Julia” premiered its first three episodes on Max on Nov. 16.
