Julia Roberts Shares the Real Reason She’ll Never Strip Down on Camera

Julia Roberts, in her own words, has had a very “G-rated career” but it’s not due to a lack of offers! The Erin Brokovich actress is on the cover British Vogue‘s February issue and, in the cover story, breaks down her impressive three decade career in Hollywood and her choice to never appear nude on screen.

In an interview conducted by Notting Hill screenwriter Richard Curtis, Roberts was asked about her “feelings of responsibility to other women” and her thoughts on what she is “representing” when it comes to her acting choices and, in response, referenced her decision to avoid certain scenes.

“I think it would be more to the point that the things I choose not to do are representative of me,” the Pretty Woman actress explained. “You know, not to be criticizing others’ choices, but for me to not take off my clothes in a movie or be vulnerable in physical ways is a choice that I guess I make for myself. But in effect, I’m choosing not to do something as opposed to choosing to do something.”

Roberts also told Curtis that her role as Anna, an A-list star, in his 1999 romcom was “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.”

“I was so uncomfortable!” Roberts, 56, told her longtime friend. “I mean, we’ve talked about this so many times, but I almost didn’t take the part because it just seemed — oh, it just seemed so awkward.”

“I didn’t even know how to play that person,” she added. She also revealed that she “loathed” the clothes she was initially told to wear in her iconic scene with Hugh Grant — yes, the one with the famous line: “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

“My driver, lovely Tommy, I sent him back to my flat that morning. I said, ‘Go into my bedroom and grab this, this and this out of my closet,’ ” Roberts recalled. “And it was my own flip-flops and my cute little blue velvet skirt and a T-shirt and my cardigan.”

“I mean, it was a great scene,” she said of the beloved moment.
