Julia Roberts is grateful for the life she's been able to create.

In an interview with British Vogue, the actress, 56, opened up about having the ability to pause her work life to focus on her family, saying that she feels lucky that her career success came before she wanted to start a family. Roberts is mom to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 19, as well as son Henry, 16, whom she shares with husband Danny Moder, 54.

"Well, I think that the luckiest aspect of my work life/family life is that the success of my work life came earlier," Roberts says. "So by the time I had the success of my family life and had a husband and children who wanted to stay at home, I had been working for 18 years. And so I felt that I had the luxury. I didn't have to pick one or the other."

Noting that because her career had matured by the time she welcomed kids into her life, it was easier to choose family over work.

"So it was easy to pause work life to nurture my home life. And so, because I have girlfriends who were having to juggle being at work and having to go into the bathroom, and you know, get out that breast pump, I sort of went through that with them by proxy."

"To be allowed the luxury of staying home and being with my family, I had a deep gratitude for that time."

In a December interview with PEOPLE alongside Leave the World Behind costar Mahershala Ali, Roberts chatted about their new film and shared her family's own surprise TV comfort show.

“I discovered a series with my kids, The Wonder Years, which I had never seen before," said the star. "And boy, did we always look forward to cuddling up with that."

Turning to Ali, 49, who has a 6-year-old daughter Bari with wife Amatus Sami-Karim, Roberts added, “You’ll have to check that out when your girl’s a little bit bigger.”

Earlier that month, the star appeared on an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and said that her three children were all doing “great” and that “two of the three of [her] children are in college.” Roberts explained that since the two eldest children embarked on higher education, she “immediately” made supporting their schools her “entire life.”

"I wear the colors,” said the Oscar winner. “I do the whole thing.”

While Hazel and Phinnaeus are in the midst of their undergraduate experience, Jimmy Fallon, 49 asked the actress how her youngest son is handling being the only child in the house. “Is Henry loving this? Or is he kind of missing his [siblings]?”

“I think it's a good 50/50 split,” shared Roberts. “He's loving it. And I think he misses his people.”
