Julia Roberts and her three kids have a new appreciation for a popular 1990s sitcom.

In her new thriller Leave the World Behind, there’s a poignant nod to Friends as the character of Robert’s daughter Rose, played by Farrah Mackenzie, seeks comfort in the imaginary world of the beloved sitcom.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE alongside costar Mahershala Ali, Roberts, who is mom to three kids with husband Danny Moder — 19-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and son, Henry, 16 — chatted about their new film and shared her own surprise TV comfort show.

“I discovered a series with my kids, The Wonder Years, which I had never seen before," says the star, 56. "And boy, did we always look forward to cuddling up with that."

Turning to Ali, 49, who has a six-year-old daughter Bari with wife Amatus Sami-Karim, Roberts adds, “You’ll have to check that out when your girl’s a little bit bigger.”

In turn, Ali tells PEOPLE that he has his own surprise go-to comfort show. "You made me think of Alone,” he notes of the show on History. “I kind of love that show."

"I have a little inner isolationist in me. I just love seeing how intelligent some of these people are, the things that they’re able to create and build on their own. The skill set and the fact they're doing it by themselves. I also like a little House Hunters,” he adds. “Nothing too dramatic before you’re settling down. People finding their dream, cool, I’m happy for you — and [now] I’m going to go to sleep and dream.”
