Julia Roberts and ex-husband Lyle Lovett reunite (sort of) on Hand to Hand telethon

Natural disasters have a way of bringing people together, and the Hand to Hand hurricane relief telethon was no exception, uniting folks across America in an effort to raise funds in support of those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The broadcast also featured an unexpected reunion of sorts: Julia Roberts and her ex-husband Lyle Lovett both appeared on the telethon.

They weren’t technically in the same room — Roberts was manning the phones in Los Angeles, while Lovett was part of a cadre of performers joining George Strait on stage from San Antonio for the musical finale. (At one point Roberts sparked a flurry of Twitter activity when she answered the phone and passed it down to Oprah Winfrey, with many viewers surmising that the donor on the line had requested to speak with the talk show host.)

But even if the Roberts-Lovett reunion was only one of proximity in broadcast, it grabbed the attention of fans, many of whom reminisced about their marriage on Twitter.

Roberts and Lovett shocked the world when their whirlwind romance led to marriage only a few weeks after they began dating in June 1993. The pair, who were 10 years apart in age, landed on the cover of PEOPLE for their surprise wedding (guests were only notified 72 hours in advance), which the couple fit in between breaks on Lovett’s summer concert tour and Roberts’ shooting The Pelican Brief.

The marriage was barely longer than the courtship; the pair announced their separation in March 1995. Lovett told PEOPLE in November 1993 that he had never spent seven straight days with Roberts, so it’s likely their busy and disparate careers kept them apart.

The two reportedly remain friends, so here’s hoping next time they make an appearance on a telethon they’ll be in the same room.
