Based on a series of novels and stories by Dutch author Robert van Gulik, Judge Dee’s Mystery is a Chinese period mystery drama series. The plot revolves around Di Renjie, a gifted investigator, as he solves complex cases in the Tang Dynasty. Van Gulik drew inspiration for his work from Di Gong An, an 18th-century Chinese novel by an anonymous author. In that novel and those by Van Gulik, Di Renjie is modeled after the namesake historical county magistrate and statesman from seventh-century China.

As of March 2024, there is no official announcement about the sophomore season of Judge Dee’s Mystery. East Asian series don’t often last more than one season. However, Judge Dee’s Mystery can potentially be one of the exceptions. Van Gulik published an impressive number of novels and short stories revolving around Di Renjie. If the reaction of the international audience is positive after watching the series on Netflix, season 2 can potentially happen.
The cast of Judge Dee’s Mystery includes Zhou Yiwei as Di Renjie, and Wang Likun as Cao An. Ta Ji as Qiao Tai, Zhong Chuxi as Empress Wu and Ling Zi as Ma Rong are also part of the cast.

Judge Dee’s Mystery Season 2 could come out in China on Youku and on Netflix in the US and certain other regions of the world.
