JSO Community Strings perform spring concert 'A Trip Around the World'

The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra Community Strings will present a spring concert Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at St. David’s Lutheran Church.

The orchestra, under the direction of Beth Pile, has been rehearsing for seven weeks. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

The concert will include fun music from all over the world including well-known classics “Hungarian Dance No. 1” by Johannes Brahms, “Capriccio Espagnol” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakoff, and “Themes from the Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana. Also included are lighter pops including “When I’m Sixty-Four” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and in honor of the upcoming JSO concert “Every Breath You Take” by Sting and the Police.

“I try to choose a variety of music that both appeals to a general audience and challenges the players," Pile said. "A few of our local JSO musicians rehearse and perform with the orchestra and provide terrific leadership. Several of the pieces will feature local JSO violinist, Lisa Pierce who serves as concertmaster for the ensemble.”

The Community Strings is a group of mostly amateur adult string players from Cambria and Somerset counties who enjoy playing together in a group. The ensemble performs two concerts each year. The orchestra began in 2009 when the JSO identified a need for such an orchestra in the Johnstown region, similar to the community bands in the area.

“I enjoy working with these wonderful people and musicians," Pile said. "I look forward to every rehearsal.”To learn more about the Community Strings and how you can become a part of the group, visit www.johstownsymphony.org. Rehearsals for the next session will begin in September.

The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra is getting ready for its season finale, “The Music of the Police” at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets may be purchased through the box office or from Ticketmaster.
