Joy of Life Season 2 Ep 10 Recap & Spoilers: Zhang Ruoyun Confronts the Censors at the Court

The ongoing Wuxia C-drama Joy of Life Season 2, starring Zhang Ruoyun, released episode 10 on May 20, 2024. The episode focuses on Fan Xian’s (Zhang Ruoyun) attempt at justifying himself. As Fan Xian arrives at the court, he is introduced to the top military officers, including General Qin Ye, the General Councilor, and Chancellor Lin. The Left censor-in-chief, Lai Ming Cheng, admires Fan Xian for his creative genius. But he also reminds him that he must uphold the law and punish the treacherous.

The second prince, Chen Ze, asks Fan Xian not to take Censor Lai’s words to heart. When asked how he will deal with adversity, Fan Xian answers that he is an honest person and would attend to the situation with integrity. Other familiar faces and patrons of Fan Xian, including Chen Ping Ping, Fan Jian, the crown prince, and others, are also present at the court.

Meanwhile, the court begins its session after the Emperor of Qing arrives. He asks the censorate if they have read the defense booklet Fan Xian has written. The emperor is disappointed when they keep quiet. He asks the two defendants to come forward. The censor-in-chief holds Fan Xian responsible for taking bribes on behalf of the Overwatch Council and accuses him of disobeying the law. Fan Xian politely denies the accusations brought against him.

Next, Censor Lai accuses Eunuch Dai of bribing Fan Xian. The emperor summons him as a witness, but he is nowhere to be found. The emperor next asks Chen Ping Ping if he can attest to Fan Xian’s innocence, but Ping Ping refuses. The inquiry receives mixed responses from other officials as well.

After the accused eunuch is dragged to court, he is asked whether he accepts the charges brought against his department. Censor Lai announces that the vegetable inspection department has been exploiting farmers for many years. Because of their acquisitiveness, many farmers sold off their belongings and even their children to pay off debt. After he presents the emperor with a folded template to review, Chancellor Lin advises him otherwise. He reminds him that it will belittle the six ministries that are put in charge of the investigation.

After the eunuch confesses to his crimes, Fan Xian presents his master card. He asks the censor if he wishes to slander the reputation of a prince since the second prince was present with him when the incident took place. He calls on censor Lai if he thinks Prince Chen Ze has formed a secret allegiance with him.

Prince Chen Ze admits to seeing Fan Xian taking bribes. He is able to clear his name after he mentions that he trusted Fan Xian’s decision. As everyone considered him to be a genius, he wanted to wait before impeaching him. Fan Xian then confesses to taking the bribe but mentions that he did it to investigate the vegetable inspection officials. He handed over the money to Chen Ping Ping.

Fan Xian succeeds in clearing his name after Ping Ping vouches for him. Furthermore, they also present a list containing the names of the corrupt officials.
