Joy Behar Recalls Seeing Men's Penises on 'Traumatizing' Childhood Beach Trips

'The View' cohost recalled trips to Coney Island when she was 10 during a discussion of nudity

Joy Behar is reflecting on “traumatizing” childhood experiences of nudity.

On Friday’s episode of The View, the ladies were gathered for their daily Hot Topics discussion when they brought up Bradley Cooper's recent admission that he doesn’t mind being nude in his house — which is also home to his 6½-year-old daughter Lea, who he shares with ex Irina Shayk.

Speaking of her own childhood, Behar, 81, then recalled what she witnessed at the age of 10.

"I never saw anything when I was a child except when [my parents would] take me to Coney Island, and these men would wear these loose drawers, and Mr. Happy would fall out," the New York native said, per Entertainment Weekly. "That was like, so traumatizing to me."

Behar added that she also saw nude women in the bath houses at the New York City beach destination.

Her cohosts then joined in with their own take on nudity within their households.

"I do not enjoy walking around naked," Sara Haines said. "I'm not naked very often. I do not cover myself up immediately between my shower and my lotions when my kids come running in, because I've made a deliberate effort for them to not feel ashamed of their bodies and to remind them that it's science."

When asked by Sunny Hostin what her children had witnessed, the Good Morning America alum, 46, had this to say: "They've seen anything they can see while I'm putting on my lotion. They don't look at me."

Before wrapping up the Cooper-inspired convo, Ana Navarro chimed in.

"I'm just glad I made it to 52 without seeing my father's schlong or my mother's hoo-hah," the political strategist and commentator jokingly said. "That would put me in therapy."

In November 2023, Behar announced the upcoming release of a new retrospective book.

A press release shared with PEOPLE by its publisher, Regalo Press, gave a little insight into what readers can expect.

The currently-untitled project will showcase, per the release, "Behar's acute powers of observation and her ability to vividly recreate the little details and fleeting moments that make up a lifetime."

Her book is expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025, and will discuss topics such as relatives, hair, erections, bullies and romance.
