“Josie and the Pussycats” Stars Reunite 23 Years Later and Say a Sequel Would 'Be Super Cool'

Rachael Leigh Cook and Tara Reid reunited at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., on Friday for a special conversation about the iconic 2001 film

It's time to get the band back together!

On Friday, Rachael Leigh Cook and Tara Reid reunited at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., to discuss their now-iconic 2000s film, Josie and the Pussycats, 23 years later.

In a conversation moderated by PEOPLE's Dory Jackson, the duo looked back on several aspects of the movie, including their incredible on-screen wardrobe and the pop-rock songs the fictional band sang. They also discussed who they'd pick to play them in a reboot of the film.

"Beyoncé," joked Cook, 42, following earlier comments about the Grammy winner having previously auditioned for Rosario Dawson's role.

Instead of picking another big-name star, Reid had a different suggestion: "Us!"

"All rock bands get back together again, right? That happens," Reid, 48, continued as the audience cheered. "I think we should remake it with this cast. That would be super cool!"

Reid added, "Let's get the campaign going."

While looking back on the film's legacy later in the panel, Cook shared her appreciation for Josie and the Pussycats' devoted fanbase helping to maintain its staying power after all these years.

"You guys are a testament that the movie worked all these years later," she said. "This is all about making that movie. So, thank you!"

PEOPLE broke the news in January that Cook and Reid would be reuniting alongside costar Dawson, 44, at the weekend-long event. Although Dawson was unable to take the stage with her former castmates on Friday, she is slated to join the pair for group photographs and sign autographs for attendees. The Ahsoka actress is also slated to participate in a Star Wars panel alongside Hayden Christensen on Saturday.

Josie and the Pussycats, based on the Archie Comic series of the same name, debuted in 2001 to poor reviews and a dismal box office run. However, the campy flick has since become a cult classic in the years that followed.

The satirical musical comedy also starred Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo and Missi Pyle.

"If this movie came out now, it would have been huge," Reid said during Friday's panel. "But I really feel like this movie was ahead of its time."

As the film's 20th anniversary commenced in 2021, the main trio staged a virtual reunion to look back on the experience. "I'm thrilled that people have continued to watch our movie and that it's only somehow gained steam over the years. That's incredibly cool," Cook said.

"Especially because I think it was way ahead of its time," Dawson added. "You watch it now, and it so resonates with the moment that we're in, but at the time, I think it was hard for people to totally appreciate the satire that it was."
