Joshua Bassett's Drops 'Only a Matter of Time' — Is It About the Olivia Rodrigo Drama?

It was "Only a Matter of Time" before Joshua Bassett gave us a new song.

On Thursday, the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star released his second song of the year titled "Only Matter of Time" and its one-take music video — but does it address the Olivia Rodrigo drama?

"Time to tell the world that you've been lying on my name. Doing what you wanna think. You're gonna get away while I leave it up to fate for now," he sings, before later adding, "When did you stop being kind? You twisted your words like a knife. Well, I'm sure you're hurting inside. Why would you make your pain mine? Making me pay for your crimes."

Later in the song, Bassett sings "This ain't a charade, I'm not playing your game. You can say what you like, doesn't mean that you're right."

Turns out, Bassett, 20, wrote the piano-backed song last summer "in a moment in time where social media was bringing a lot of darkness to my life."

"It was healing to put my phone down, turn off the noise and just write. There's good that comes from social media, but it's also become a place where people can say anything about anyone, no matter how false or damaging with no accountability," he said in a press release. "We've gotta be much kinder to each other and recognize there are real people behind the screens!"

It's hard not to connect the dots with "Drivers License" though given the string of songs that have dropped since then.

After fans went crazy tying Rodrigo's breakup track to Bassett and current girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter, Bassett released "Lie Lie Lie," where he sings, "I know what you say about me. I hope that it makes you happy. You can't seem to get me off your mind, oh. I know you're lying through your teeth." (He had teased the song well before Rodrigo's "Drivers License.")

And then last week, Carpenter — apparently the "blonde girl who always made me doubt," which Rodrigo refers to in her song — dropped "Skin," where she sings, "Maybe you didn't mean it/ Maybe blonde was the only rhyme," Carpenter, 21, sings on her track.

Regardless of meaning, Bassett is gearing up to drop his EP soon — and he's already No. 33 on Billboard's emerging artists chart.
