Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles & More Receive 2023 Tony Award Nominations (Full List)

Five years after they co-hosted the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall, Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles are returning to the awards show as nominees.

Groban is nominated for best actor (musical) for his performance in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Bareilles is nominated for best actress (musical) for her performance in a revival of another Sondheim show, Into the Woods. It’s Groban’s second nomination in an acting category; Bareilles’ first, following two nods for best original score.

The nominations were announced on Tuesday (May 2) by Myles Frost, who won a Tony last year for portraying Michael Jackson in the jukebox musical MJ, and Lea Michele, who stars in the current revival of Funny Girl.

Some Like It Hot was the nominations leader, with 13 nods, followed by & Juliet, New York, New York and Shucked with nine each; and Kimberly Akimbo and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with eight each.

The nominees for best musical are & Juliet, a jukebox musical featuring the songs of Swedish hit machine Max Martin; Shucked, with songs by country pros Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark; Kimberly Akimbo, with songs by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire (who previously collaborated on Shrek the Musical), and two musicals that were based on well-known movies – Some Like It Hot, based on the 1959 Billy Wilder classic, and New York, New York, based on the 1977 Martin Scorsese film, which is widely regarded as a miss.

Max Martin, Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald) and Shellback are among the producers nominated for & Juliet. Eligible shows that were not nominated for best musical are Almost Famous, Bad Cinderella, A Beautiful Noise and KPOP.

The nominees for best original score include four past winners in that category – Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for Some Like It Hot; Tom Kitt for Almost Famous and Tesori for Kimberly Akimbo. Kitt is nominated alongside director Cameron Crowe, who won both an Oscar and Grammy for his work on the 2000 film Almost Famous and its soundtrack. Notably missing here are John Kander and Lin-Manuel Miranda for New York, New York. Kander won three Tonys in the category for work with his late partner Fred Ebb. Miranda has won twice in the category.

Ben Platt, who won a Tony for best actor (musical) for Dear Evan Hansen, is nominated again this year for Parade.

The nominees for best revival of a musical include the two aforementioned revivals of Sondheim shows. Sweeney Todd won the 1979 award for best musical. Into the Woods was a 1988 nominee in that category. The other nominees for best musical revival are Parade and Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot. Parade was a 1999 nominee for best musical. Camelot, surprisingly, was not nominated for best musical in 1960, when the musical starring Julie Andrews and Richard Burton was a hit.

Eligible shows that were not nominated for best revival of a musical are 1776 and Bob Fosse’s Dancin’. 1776 won best musical in 1969. Dancin’ was nominated in 1978.

Hosted by Ariana DeBose, the 76th Annual Tony Awards will air live on CBS on Sunday, June 11 from the historic United Palace in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City from 8:00-11:00 p.m., ET/5:00-8:00 p.m., PT. The show will also stream live and on demand on Paramount+.  Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss will produce the show, with Weiss also serving as director.

The 2022/2023 eligibility season began Thursday, May 5, 2022 and ended Thursday, April 27, 2023. The Tony Awards will be voted in 26 competitive categories by 769 designated Tony voters within the theatre community.

The Tony Awards will present the 2023 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre to production stage manager Lisa Dawn Cave; Victoria Bailey, executive director, Theatre Development Fund; and theatrical accountant, Robert Fried. Established in 1990, these awards are awarded annually to institutions, individuals and/or organizations that have demonstrated extraordinary achievement in theatre, but are not eligible in any of the established Tony Award categories.

CBS and Pluto TV will present The Tony Awards: Act One, a pre-show of live, exclusive content leading into the 76th Annual Tony Awards. The celebration streams from 6:30-8:00 p.m., ET/3:30-5:00 p.m. PT, on Pluto TV, the leading free streaming TV service (FAST). The 2023 American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. For the CBS broadcast, Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss/White Cherry Entertainment are Executive Producers. Weiss also serves as Director.
