Josh Duhamel is sharing his appreciation for his ex-wife.

While appearing on The Jess Cagle Show, the actor — who recently announced he is expecting his first baby with wife Audra Mari, 29 — opened up about his ex-wife Fergie's support after he revealed his exciting news.

"Thankfully Fergie's an amazing woman, she really is," says Duhamel, who shares his 10-year-old son Axl with Fergie. "She's taken Audra in. It could be much worse."

"That's the thing, you never know how these things are going to go. But because she's such a kind-hearted person, she really, truly is, she only has love for Audra. I can't believe how excited she is for us. It could be a lot worse. I've seen it. I've lived it. And thankfully we have a really civil situation."

When Duhamel, 50, and Mari announced that they were expecting a baby together earlier this week, Fergie, 48, was one of the many commenters who left well wishes for the couple.

Writing underneath the post, Fergie made sure to send her congratulations, saying “I am truly happy for you guys🥰🥰 Axl can’t wait to be a big brother."

The singer was married to Duhamel from 2009 to 2019. The couple jointly announced their split in a September 2017 statement, and Fergie later filed for divorce in May 2019.

In March, Duhamel opened up about Axl, saying that he "finally" enjoys sports. "Does my son play sports? He's starting to get into it finally. I didn't think he was ever going to get into it, but he really loves basketball now," Duhamel exclusively told PEOPLE.

"He likes to throw the football around with me a little bit. I try not to be overbearing with him in sports, but I try to let him find it rather than me push it on him," he continued.

"It's taken him a long time and it's actually been a little bit frustrating, 'cause I was thinking he was going to be like me, but he's getting there. He likes it."
