Joni Mitchell has made her Grammy Awards performance debut, taking the stage alongside the likes of Brandi Carlile, Jacob Collier, Allison Russell, Lucius, Blake Mills, and more for a truly show-stopping rendition of “Both Sides Now” at Sunday night’s (February 4th) ceremony.

The performance began with an intro speech by Carlile, who described Mitchell as “one of the most influential and emotionally-generous creators in human history.” Celebrating her intimate, vulnerable approach to songwriting, Carlile praised Mitchell as a pioneer, saying that she’s like “the first person to strip down at the skinny dipping party and take that awkward, terrifying leap before everyone else eventually joyfully follows.” Putting things into a bigger perspective, Carlile reflected to the audience that history “will remember that we lived in the time of Joni Mitchell.”

Then, the camera cut to Mitchell singing “Both Sides Now” from a grand white chair on a stage decorated by candelabras. As she turned her throne to face the audience, they erupted in gracious applause. From there, the ensemble delivered a thoughtful, reflective rendition of the classic, highlighting Mitchell’s role as one of the world’s finest songsmiths. Watch a clip of the performance below, and good luck keeping a dry eye.

Beyond performing, Sunday’s award proceedings saw Mitchell secure her 10th Grammy win, thanks to her 2023 live album, Joni Mitchell at Newport, which won for Best Folk Album.

Joni Mitchell at Newport was recorded during a surprise set by Mitchell at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, a historic moment that marked the ‘60s icon’s first public performance in 20 years.

In the time since her Newport performance, Mitchell — who suffered from a serious aneurysm in 2015 — has kept herself quite busy. In March 2023, she received the Gershwin Prize and performed at the ceremony. In June, she staged her first publicly-announced concert in 20 years at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington.

Joni Mitchell at Newport arrived itself in July 2023, followed by a compilation of demos and live cuts, and the release of a never-before-heard track, “Like Veils Said Lorraine.” Last October, Mitchell even joined Carlile onstage for the latter’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

After the Grammys, Mitchell has announced her own headlining shows at the Hollywood Bowl, set to happen on October 19th and 20th, 2024. It’ll be her first headlining performances in Los Angeles since 2000. Grab tickets here.
