One of America’s most famous unsolved murders, the 1996 killing of JonBenét Ramsey, is getting the true-crime limited scripted series treatment.

The project, from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, has been heating up for green light. A platform has not been determined yet, with Paramount+ rumored as a possibility.

The series is created and written by Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach who sold it as a pitch to MTVES/101. The duo executive produce with Richard LaGravenese who serves as showrunner. David Glasser and James Allen executive produce for 101 Studios.

The yet untitled project details the mysterious death and the surrounding media frenzy in the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a case that captivated an entire nation and left us with more questions than answers.

The series is expected to explore in detail all possible suspects.

JonBenét Ramsey was 6 years old when she was reported missing from her Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996. She was found dead several hours later in the basement of the home, along with a long ransom note. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as strangulation and was ruled a homicide.

Boulder police initially believe JonBenét’s mother, Patsy, had written the ransom note, and that the note and child’s body had been staged by her parents in an effort to cover up the murder. Her brother, who was 9 at the time of JonBenét’s death, was cleared as a suspect in 1999.

In 2013, unsealed court documents revealed that a 1999 grand jury had recommended filing charges against the Ramseys, which included hindering the prosecution, but the DA determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue a successful indictment. The case remains cold to this day.

Amazon MGM Studios is in production on Heads Of State, a movie staring John Cena and Idris Elba, which is based on a pitch by Query who co-wrote the script with Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec.

Query and Wallach are repped by Verve; Query is managed by Ground Control.
