Jonathan Scott’s Ultra-Romantic Proposal to Zooey Deschanel Is What True Love Is All About

Knowing that celebrities have access to just about anything they put their mind to, major celebrity events, like weddings or birthday parties, often pull out all the stops. So, of course, celebrity proposals are as romantic and expensive as they can be.

For Jonathan Scott, who proposed to New Girl star Zooey Deschanel in August 2023, the proposal was as exclusive as it was romantic. “We were in Glasgow, Scotland. We were on a family trip with the kids, and, I had planned it all in advance for doing the tour and everything,” the Property Brothers star told Page Six. “And then at the end, we cleared the castle.”

As a reminder, Deschanel shares daughter Elsie, 8, and son Charlie, 6, with her ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.

“We were in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle, and we were the last people on the property and I had it set up so they said, ‘Oh, there’s a pipe band playing. You want to go listen?’ Yeah, great.” As the pipe band started playing, they made their way up to the proposal spot.

“We went up to this beautiful bluff overlooking the city, and this pipe band [was] playing,” Scott remembered. “And then all of a sudden a guitar steps forward and started playing Neil Young, our song, ‘Harvest Moon,’ and she’s like, ‘Wait, what?’ And then the kids pulled up a banner that said, ‘Will you marry me?’” Talk about the sweetest way to make her kids a part of the moment!

“She cried and she said yes,” Scott said of the actress’ reaction. “And I’m a blubbering mess. Like the wedding is going to be a disaster because I will not be able to get through.”

Following their engagement, Deschanel shared the news with her fans on Instagram. “Forever starts now!!! 🥰♾️🥰” she wrote in the caption alongside a selfie from the two of them.

Late last year, Scott gave an update on how wedding planning was going. “You know, things are coming along,” the Celebrity IOU star told Entertainment Tonight in December. “We’re gonna get through the holidays and then we’re going to put our focus on that.”

So while wedding planning wasn’t in full swing just yet, the two have a good idea of what their big day will look like. “Zooey and I are gonna plan it ourselves, so yeah, we throw some pretty good parties,” he joked. “And I think the main thing for us is to throw a wicked awesome party.”

With a proposal as romantic and elaborate as theirs, we can’t wait to see what they’re wedding will look like!
