Jonathan Majors Movie “Magazine Dreams ”Dropped by Distributor Following Actor's Guilty Verdict

Jonathan Majors's acclaimed sports drama Magazine Dreams is seeking a new home weeks after the actor's guilty verdict.

Multiple outlets reported Tuesday that Searchlight Pictures has returned the film rights to Magazine Dreams, an independent drama that made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival last January, to its filmmakers. The movie stars Majors — who was found guilty on misdemeanor charges of assault and harassment last month in New York City — as an aspiring bodybuilder struggling with his physical and mental health.

Magazine Dreams was written and directed by Elijah Bynum (Hot Summer Nights) and costars Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige, Mike O'Hearn, Harrison Page and Harriet Sansom Harris. Multiple outlets reported Tuesday that the movie's filmmakers will now seek a new distributor to sell the movie to.

Representatives for Searchlight Pictures did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Wednesday.

A Sundance Film Festival synopsis for Magazine Dreams described Majors' aspiring bodybuilder character, named Killian Maddox, as "obsessively working out between court-mandated therapy appointments and part-time shifts at a grocery store where he harbors a crush on a friendly cashier."

"Though Killian’s struggles to read social cues and maintain control of his volatile temper amplify his sense of disconnection amid a hostile world, nothing deters him from his fiercely protected dream of bodybuilding superstardom, not even the doctors who warn that he’s causing permanent damage to his body with his quest," the synopsis reads.

Searchlight and its parent company Walt Disney Studios originally scheduled Magazine Dreams for release in December during the height of awards season. In October, multiple outlets reported the film was taken off a Disney release calendar as his criminal case in N.Y.C. approached a trial.

In December, Majors was found guilty of misdemeanor assault in the third degree, recklessly causing physical injury and harassment in the second degree after an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in New York in March 2023. He was found not guilty of misdemeanor assault in the third degree with intent to cause physical injury and misdemeanor aggravated harassment in the second degree.

Majors said that he felt "absolutely shocked and afraid" by the guilty verdict during an interview on Good Morning America on Jan. 8. “How is that possible? Based off the evidence, based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence," he said at the time.

Marvel Studios confirmed to PEOPLE that it parted ways with Majors, who portrayed the villain Kang the Conqueror in the most recent Ant-Man movie and the Disney+ series Loki, following his guilty verdict.

Additionally, CNN reported last Friday that Majors will no longer play Dennis Rodman in an in-the-works biopic centered around the former NBA star's life. The actor's legal representatives did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment at that time.

Majors will return to court for sentencing on Feb. 6. He could face up to a year in jail.
