Jonathan Demme Memorial Planned for Tonight's Episode of Shots Fired

One of Jonathan Demme’s final projects will pay tribute to the late director.

Demme helmed tonight’s episode of Fox’s police-shooting drama Shots Fired (airing at 8/7c), and the episode will honor him with an in-memoriam title card at the end, our sister site Deadline is reporting. Demme passed away on Wednesday after a bout with esophageal cancer at the age of 73.

Tonight’s episode of Shots Fired is the sixth for the series, and features a full-scale riot that erupts when tensions between citizens and local cops boil over. Demme, the Oscar-winning director of Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, also directed the second episode of Netflix’s upcoming crime drama Seven Seconds, starring Regina King.

“We mourn the passing of Jonathan Demme,” Shots Fired creators Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood said in a statement. “He was a tremendous artist who shared our belief that art can change the world. He was a gift, and he made everyone around him better. He taught us to care a little bit more, believe a little bit more and listen a little bit more. We will miss him.”
