Jonathan Bennett and Jaymes Vaughan are sharing some words of wisdom for same-sex couples shopping for engagement and wedding rings.

"Create your own tradition," the Mean Girls alum told PEOPLE in an interview as the official host of the Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebration in partnership with KAY Jewelers.

Before tying the knot in March 2022 in Mexico, Bennett, 42, and Vaughan, 40, explain how they worked with KAY to create their own tradition of a personalized wedding ring. Our Ring by Jaymes & Jonathan, which the couple designed, features a silver band with round-cut diamonds around one side of the ring.

When they got engaged, the diamonds faced out, so the world could see them. Once they tied the knot, they flipped their bands to let the diamonds sparkle toward them.

"We designed this because we both wanted to have an engagement ring and be excited and say, look, I got engaged," says Vaughan, who is co-hosting the celebration.

Vaughan adds that since releasing their ring with KAY, he and Bennett have noticed other LGBTQ+ couples use it — and put their personal touch on it.

"A couple just messaged me on Instagram a couple of weeks ago to say they got married and they had passed the ring around to all of their wedding guests so they could put their blessing and their love on it before it came back to them to flip," The Real Friends of Weho star says.

He adds: "It is super cool and really beautiful and super touching, and it just speaks to creating your own traditions."

For Bennett, being able to create this ring has allowed him to break heteronormative norms and make the wedding space more inclusive.

"You don't have to do what has been ingrained in us," the Food Network’s Battle of the Decades says. "It's just kind of what we grew up with, and what our parents grew up with. But you can make your own thing, and I think you should, especially with a same-sex couple."

He adds: "The wedding space is still relatively new for us, so do your own thing, have at it. Don't be afraid to make something your own because it's your love story. It should be your own."
