Jonah Hill says no-one saw his best movie performance 'because Amazon f***** up'
Jonah Hill believes his best acting performance has been largely overlooked after its distributor messed up its release.
The 36-year-old actor has put in some amazing performances during his career so far, earning two Oscar nominations for this efforts, but he considers his turn in 2018’s Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot the best work of his career so far.
Talking to GQ about films he’d recommend watching in self-isolation, Hill urged people to check out Gus Van Sant’s 1989 drama Drugstore Cowboy.

“Gus Van Sant is one of my mentors, one of my favourite people on the planet, and pioneer of queer cinema. He made a film with myself and Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara two years ago called He Won’t Get Far on Foot and nobody saw it ‘cause Amazon completely f***ed it up. But it’s the best acting I have done and will ever do,” he told GQ.
The film, released by Amazon Studios (and MUBI in the UK), stars Phoenix as cartoonist John Callahan and is based on Callahan's autobiography of the same name.
The artist became a quadriplegic at the age of 21 after being involved in a drink driving incident, and Hill plays Donnie, Callahan’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor who helps him to rebuild his life.
It was picked up by Amazon Studios in March 2017 when production got underway and received a solid response when it premiered at Sundance in 2018.
It was scheduled for release in May that year, but pushed back to July, and it was initially only released into four cinemas in North America, despite receiving a warm response from critics. It gradually expanded into 266 screens, and grossed $1,441,705 (£1.25 million) in total domestically.
It received a limited release in the UK that October from boutique distributor MUBI where it took $21,478 in total, and went on to gross $4,241,656 globally against a reported budget of $3.5 million.
