Jon Stewart Ousts Colbert to Attack Trump and Fox News

On The Late Show Thursday night, host Stephen Colbert used that day’s resignation of Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes to revel in his downfall (Ailes is facing allegations of sexual harassment) and to bring back an old friend. Jon Stewart emerged from beneath Colbert’s desk. Then he ousted Colbert and took over that desk, delivering what was essentially a new version of his old Daily Show editorials.

Stewart barely mentioned Ailes and Fox, however; alas, he instead focused on the just concluded Republican National Convention, saying that among Donald Trump’s final-night speech messages were, “jail your political opponent [and] scare the bejesus out of everybody.”

Stewart relied on Fox News clips of Sean Hannity ridiculing President Obama as rich, elitist, and thin-skinned, and then made the obvious comparisons to Trump. In truth, it wasn’t among Stewart’s best routines — grounding his criticism in Hannity, who’s not really on the pop-culture radar, wasn’t the most fruitful line of attack. But Stewart did have some sting toward the end, when he bellowed, “I saw a lotta people on the convention floor with their Blue Lives Matter rhetoric who either remained silent or actively fought against the 9/11 First Responders Bill reauthorization! I see you and I see your bull****!”

In a sight gag, Stewart also compared Trump versus Hillary Clinton to Taylor Swift versus Kanye West. I wonder if Stewart will reunite with Colbert at any point during next week’s Democratic National Convention.
