Gen X satirist Jon Stewart opened the Monday night episode of “The Daily Show”—his second once-per-week appearance since Stewart’s unexpected return to the basic-cable program that made him a household name—by reacting to backlash for his inaugural episode. Stewart made headlines for suggesting that it’s not just former President Donald Trump who is unfit for the most important elected office on the planet, but that President Joe Biden was perhaps getting up there in age, and showing some signs of mental decay. (This is Stewart’s opinion, not ours! Don’t cancel us, social media!)

Stewart acknowledged the backlash, then showed some messages fired off on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Everything on Twitter gets a backlash,” Stewart then countered. “I’ve seen Twitter tell labradoodles to go f–k themselves. I just think it’s better to deal head-on with what’s an apparent issue to people. I mean … we’re just talking here! It was just one f–king show! It was 20 minutes! I did 20 minutes in one f–king show! But I guess as the famous saying goes: ‘Democracy dies in discussion,’” he joked, quoting The Washington Post’s motto.

“But look: I have sinned against you, I’m sorry,” he concluded, going full-Gen X by making a Jimmy Swaggert reference. “It was never my intention to say out loud what I saw with my eyes and then brain.”

If you recall, Stewart was among the first generally-agreed-to-be-reasonable personalities to go on television and suggest that the novel coronavirus that first sprang from Wuhan, China may have had something to do with the fact that a laboratory that studied coronaviruses happened to be in Wuhan, China.

The remainder of Stewart’s program stood on less controversial ground—satirizing Vladimir Putin and his new “useful idiotTucker Carlson.
