Rivas is originally from Texas, where he attended Texas A&M and earned a degree in atmospheric science.

He is no stranger to Iowa weather. Not long after graduating college, Rivas found himself in the Midwest. He worked for KIMT from 2015 to 2019 as the morning meteorologist for the Mason City-based CBS affiliate covering northern Iowa and southern Minnesota.

“His passion for weather and positivity are infectious," said KCCI News Director Allison Smith in a news release announcing the hire. "People will enjoy spending their mornings with Jon and the rest of our morning team."

Rivas joins anchors Alyx Sacks, Eric Hanson and Scott Carpter on the morning show, which airs 4:30-7 a.m. weekdays on the CBS affiliate.

He fell in love with the Midwest and the ever-fluctuating weather patterns that occur here, according to his biography on KCCI's website. He called the range of weather experienced in Des Moines "a weatherman’s paradise."

Rivas and his wife have lived in the Des Moines area for the past five years.
